Award-winning Documentary Sheds New Light on Forced Organ Harvesting in China

October 13, 2015 | By Minghui correspondent Tang Xiuming

(Minghui.org) Before its international and European premiere at Film Casino in Vienna, Austria on October 27, the award-winning film Hard to Believe is driving more attention to its theme: China’s killing of prisoners of conscience for their organs.

The film is being broadcast on various PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) stations in the United States. “Hard To Believe” has already won six prestigious awards from The Accolade Global Film Competition.

The Daily Beast website published a report on organ harvesting in China on September 29. The online edition of Daily Mirror and Daily Mail in Britain also ran stories on the issue on October 3.

Director Ken Stone, a two-time Emmy Award winner for documentary work, chose to highlight the significance of bystanders’ choices – a different approach from previous documentaries on the subject.

“In the U.S., in Europe, you have to be dead first in order to be an organ donor. In China, they make you dead,” Dr. Arthur Caplan, head of the Division of Medical Ethics at New York University, was quoted in the documentary. “It’s not up for discussion as to whether murder for parts is taking place. It’s now just a question of whether we’re going to continue to put up with it.”

According to journalist and researcher Ethan Gutmann, over one million Falun Gong practitioners were incarcerated in labor camps, detention centers, psychiatric facilities, and black jails by end of 2000, a year after the persecution began in 1999.

“By the end of 2005, China’s transplant apparatus had increased so dramatically that a tissue-matched organ could be located within two weeks for any foreign organ tourist with cash,” said Mr. Gutmann at a September hearing hosted by the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) on Capitol Hill.

“While the execution of death-row prisoners – hardened criminals – supplied some of the organs, the majority were extracted from Falun Gong practitioners – a fact that wasn’t even being kept all that secret from the prisoner population, visiting foreign surgeons, or potential customers,” he added.

State Actions and Military Involvement

It was initially hard to believe for a lot of Falun Gong practitioners as well when the news of forced organ harvesting broke in 2006.

In addition to the findings of independent investigators, practitioners gathered information and pieced together evidence on the comprehensive physical examinations they were put through while in detention: why would the Chinese communist regime conduct these checkups and torture the practitioners at the same time to force them to abandon their beliefs? The aim of such examinations was for their “retail” organs, and such actions were being carried out by the state.

On September 27, as on all other days of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to New York, Falun Gong practitioners held up banners and placards near the Waldorf Astoria and along roadways to the United Nations. The banners demanded an end to the persecution of Falun Gong and urged China’s top official to bring Jiang Zemin to to justice.

An investigative phone call to former Defense Minister Liang Guanglie in May 2012 revealed that the Chinese Communist Party’s Central Military Commission had held meetings to discuss forced organ harvesting. The call was conducted and recorded by WOIPFG (the World Organization for Investigating the Persecution of Falun Gong).

In a July 2007 phone conversation with a WOIPFG investigator posing as a potential customer, Chen Qiang, a kidney broker for the PLA No. 307 Hospital in Beijing, admitted that Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, police, and prison authorities orchestrate and trade practitioners’ organs, and that they could even provide identification information proving that the source of the organs were indeed Falun Gong practitioners.

When the former head of the CCP Jiang Zemin launched the persecution in 1999, his directives were to: ruin Falun Gong practitioners’ reputation, cut off their finances, and extinguish them physically. Organ harvesting fits the third directive while making money for the Party. Mr. Gutmann estimates about $200,000 per person.

The European Parliament passed a resolution in December 2013, “expressing deep concern” over “credible reports of systematic, state-sanctioned organ harvesting from non-consenting prisoners of conscience.”

Hard to Believe is produced by Swoop Films and available on DVD in addition to screenings. Visit its official website hardtobelievemovie.com for more information.

Master Twice Saved My Mother

October 13, 2015 | By a Falun Gong practitioner Jing Bai in Jiangsu Province, China

(Minghui.org) I began to practice Falun Dafa in 1996. My mother began to practice no long after that. My mother only went to school for a year and could not read or write. She wished to read Zhuan Falun and sought Master Li’s assistance. In her heart, she asked, “Master, could you please help me? I do not know many words, and I cannot read your book. How can I study the Fa?”

She fell asleep on the table. When she awoke, she saw Chinese words moving in front of her eyes. This continued day and night.

She then tried to read Zhuan Falun and found that she could read it fluently. My father said, “This is really amazing. How can you read the book so easily?”

“Master is teaching me!” she replied.

Tumour Disappears

Ever since mother began cultivating, she has been happy. In 1997, she found an egg-sized tumour under her arm. She continued to go to group exercises in the morning. She also continued to study the Fa every day with other practitioners.

My elder sister, who is not a practitioner, asked me to take mother to her doctor. I said, “She is a Dafa practitioner, and Master is looking after her. If you want her to see a doctor, you should ask her about it yourself.”

Mother told my sister, “I am a cultivator and I do not have illness. Master is looking after me.” After several days, yellow liquid came out of the tumour. Soon afterwards, the tumour was gone.

Since the beginning of the persecution, mother has insisted on clarifying the truth to people. While I was detained in a labor camp in 2001, she looked after my two daughters who were eleven and twelve years old at the time My husband’s parents did not help care for my daughters and complained about my mother. So did my father and my siblings. In those days, my mother was under a lot of pressure.

I was put into a prison in 2007 and mother had to look after everything for me for a long time. When she visited, I told her, “You cannot stop studying Falun Dafa. We must believe in Master. He is teaching us the best way go be good people through Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. We are not wrong.”

Saved Again

One night in March 2014, my mother collapsed. She could not walk. A few days later, my siblings took her to a hospital where she was diagnosed with cerebellar degeneration. The doctor asked my siblings to take our mother home because the illness was incurable.

I believed that the diagnosis was wrong. My mother did not have illness. However, my siblings insisted on giving her medicine intravenously. After three days on the IV, Mother was still getting worse, She could not recognise anyone, eat or drink. She slept all day.

With righteous thoughts I said, “We cannot continue the IV. She is becoming worse and worse. We must stop immediately.” Mother agreed with me, and we stopped the IV.

I went to Master’s photo. I hoped that Master would give my mother a chance to accomplish her predestined mission of helping to save people. Other practitioners also asked for help at the photo. During the day, mother listened to recordings of Master’s Fa lectures, and in the evening we read Master’s works to her and sent forth righteous thoughts.

Ten days later, mother had a dream in which she shouted, “Master, Master, save me.” The next day, my sister-in-law said, “Your mother will be saved. She was seeking Master’s help in her dream.”

I entered my mother’s room, and she was conscious. Though she was still not able to speak well, her mind was very clear. I told her what had happened while she was unconscious. I reminded her of looking within, and she said that she had held onto fears and anger.

We continued to read the Fa to her and to send forth righteous thoughts. She began to feel hungry and managed to eat. Gradually, she regained full speech and started to do the exercises. In less than two months, mother could clarify the truth to people on the street. She kept studying the Fa and doing the exercises. Every day she rises before 4:00 am and meditates for more than two hours.

My mother is now 82 years old, and she still manages to clarify the truth to people everyday. “I have not been doing the three things perfectly,” she said. “I must be more diligent so I can repay Master’s grace.”

66 Falun Gong Practitioners from Changchun, Jilin Province Sue Jiang Zemin in Four Month Period

October 13, 2015 | By a Minghui correspondent in Jilin Province, China

(Minghui.org) A total of 66 Falun Gong practitioners from Changchun City, Jilin Province have filed criminal complaints against Jiang Zemin between late May and September 27, 2015, according to reports compiled by the Minghui website.

The practitioners charge the former Chinese dictator with initiating the brutal suppression of Falun Gong and hold him responsible for the tremendous suffering inflicted upon them by his campaign. The criminal complaints were mailed to the Supreme People’s Court and Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

Many of these practitioners recounted how Falun Gong returned them to health and gave them a new outlook on life. Their dream to live a healthier and happier life, however, was shattered when Jiang Zemin launched a nationwide campaign to eradicate the practice in 1999.

Simply for refusing to give up their belief, they were arrested, detained, tortured, and had their homes ransacked and personal belongings seized. Many also saw their families implicated for their belief.

Profiles of a Few of the Practitioners

Ms. Lv Guixia (吕桂侠), 42, was arrested three times. She was detained in two detention centers for a total of one year and sentenced to prison twice for a total of seven-and-a-half years. Ms. Lv was tortured. She had to stand upright for long hours, sit on a small stool, and was forced to undergo brainwashing. She was isolated for more than one year because of a tuberculosis infection.

Ms. Lv’s parents and older brother, who also practice Falun Gong, were imprisoned in June 2004. Her father died from torture that he suffered in the prison two months after he was granted medical parole. Her mother died because of worry over Ms. Lv’s deteriorating health. Ms. Lv was not allowed to attend her mother’s funeral.

Mr. Jiang Xiuyu (姜秀玉), in his 40s, was sentenced four times to forced labor, for a total of six-and-one-half years. The perpetrators in the persecution extorted money and his home was ransacked several times. In the labor camp, he was shocked with electric batons and after he went on a hunger strike he was brutally forced fed. After his arrest in 2010, His family was denied visitation rights and his son was harassed at his workplace.

Mr. Sun Xiaoyu (孙肖雨), 29, was arrested and handcuffed on May 23, 2002 when he was just 16 years old. In the detention center, he was confined to a solitary cell for three months. Then, he was given two years of forced labor.

Ms. Wang Shuqin (王淑芹), 64, was arrested a total of four times and her home ransacked. She was forced to pay for food while she was held in the detention center. She was sentenced to one year of forced labor in March 2002.

Mr. Jia Shenglin (贾生林), 42, was fired from his workplace in 2000 because he practiced Falun Gong. He was sentenced to two years of forced labor, where he was tortured. The torture he suffered included beatings, sleep deprivation, and sitting on a small stool for a long time.

Background

In 1999, Jiang Zemin, as head of the Chinese Communist Party, overrode other Politburo standing committee members and launched the violent suppression of Falun Gong.

The persecution has led to the deaths of many Falun Gong practitioners in the past 16 years. More have been tortured for their belief and even killed for their organs. Jiang Zemin is directly responsible for the inception and continuation of the brutal persecution.

Under his personal direction, the Chinese Communist Party established an extralegal security organ, the “610 Office,” on June 10, 1999. The organization overrides police forces and the judicial system in carrying out Jiang’s directive regarding Falun Gong: to ruin their reputations, cut off their financial resources, and destroy them physically.

Chinese law allows for citizens to be plaintiffs in criminal cases, and many practitioners are now exercising that right to file criminal complaints against the former dictator.
