Sydney, Australia: Locals Express Support for Falun Gong

June 18, 2016 | By Hua Qing, Minghui Correspondent in Sydney, Australia

( The streets of the Asian community of Eastwood, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, were lined with local Falun Gong practitioners raising awareness about their peaceful spiritual practice and the persecution it endures in China on June 11. Many people were shocked to learn about the ongoing organ harvesting atrocities targeting Falun Gong practitioners and other prisoners of conscience.

Falun Gong practitioners in Sydney held activities in Asian community of Eastwood.

Overseas Chinese Should Step Up and Say ‘No!’

Mr. Heng, a Chinese Malaysian business owner who works in Australia, said, “What you are doing is great! I hope more people will learn about the CCP’s crimes against Falun Gong practitioners. You have never created any trouble for anyone. I’ve observed you doing the morning exercises and your peaceful protests. No Australian has ever complained. Why does the CCP persecute Falun Gong? The Chinese government should allow them to practice openly.”

Mr. Heng was adamant that former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who initiated the persecution, should be brought to justice, “It’s very important!”

Mr. Heng, a Chinese Malaysian

Mr. Heng said, “We overseas Chinese do our best to bring honor to the Chinese people. But the CCP brings us shame and humiliation with its crimes of persecution and organ harvesting. Overseas Chinese should step up and say ‘No!’ It’s critical!”

Governments Are Supposed to Protect People but the CCP Doesn’t.

Bernadette (middle) and Nicole (right) sign a petition calling for an end to organ harvesting.

Bernadette and Nicole both signed the petition calling for an end to the organ harvesting in China. Bernadette said, “Governments are supposed to protect people, but the CCP doesn’t. How can it persecute people who follow Truthfulness- Compassion-Forbearance? What the Chinese government is doing is ridiculous.”

She said she sees practitioners’ activities and peaceful protests in many places, and always supports them. She’s even told others about it and asked them to sign the petition.

Nicole added, “We should expose what the Party is doing to stop it. I hope you will do more to tell people about Falun Gong. I think the CCP will collapse soon.”

Practitioner Ms. Gao helped more than 20 Chinese people quit the Communist organizations that day. She said, “Many young people from China don’t know much about the CCP’s persecution against Falun Gong. They think it has nothing to do with them, but after they read the flyer and learn more about it, they willingly quit the Communist organizations. Those who have previously quit are happy to see us and treat us like we’re old friends.”

Falun Gong practitioners have been exposing the persecution and helping people withdraw from Communist organizations in Eastwood every weekend. More and more Chinese people are learning about the persecution. Newly immigrated Chinese eagerly take the informational materials so they can know the truth about what’s going on in China.

Paris, France: “Falun Gong Is Not Just China’s Treasure, It’s the World’s Treasure”

June 29, 2016 | By Zhou Wenying, a Minghui correspondent in Paris, France

( 26-year-old Christian Carpineta from Italy stood in front of some posters near the Eiffel Tower reading about the brutal persecution of Falun Gong in China. He began asking questions to some practitioners who were there raising awareness about this spiritual practice that’s been persecuted since 1999.

Learning that Falun Gong is rooted in traditional Chinese culture with core principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, Carpineta commented, “It’s not just China’s treasure, it’s the world’s treasure, the treasure of mankind.”

Many visitors read the posters and learned about the persecution of Falun Gong in China.

One of many who stopped at the Falun Gong display on June 26, Carpineta currently resides in Nantes in Western France, and works at a nursing home. He told a practitioner that this was the first time he heard about the persecution.

“I pay special attention to persecutions, especially those against people of faith. China has a special place in history. However, because of the Cultural Revolution, its spiritual beliefs are persecuted and historical relics destroyed. The country has come to a dangerous stage.”

Encouraging the practitioners to continue their efforts, he said, “We need to make people aware of what is happening in China and cherish this practice.”

Many visitors read the posters and talked to practitioners

Carlos Meldenes signed the petition demanding that the persecution stop after he learned about China’s state-sanctioned organ harvesting from living Falun Gong practitioners incarcerated for their faith.

“This is a crime of genocide, a bloody slaughtering. If it was done by a regime, then the regime is guilty,” Meldenes said in an outraged tone. “You must let everyone know that the Chinese communist regime is committing a crime against humanity.”

Cecile from Paris is an 80-year-old Christian woman who understands religious persecution. After she signed a petition, she said, “I want to help fight for your rights. You are doing great work. Keep it up!”

Toronto Dragon Boat Festival: “I Admire Falun Gong’s Spirit”

June 24, 2016

( Mr. Wang from Liaoning, China, was glad to run into Falun Gong practitioners at the 28th Dragon Boat Festival on Toronto’s Centre Island on June 18 and 19.

“I signed a petition back in China condemning the persecution,” Mr. Wang said to a practitioner at the Falun Gong booth. “I also quit the Party. A Falun Gong practitioner in China helped me.”

Mr. Wang said that the persecution of Falun Gong is really brutal. “I truly admire Falun Gong’s spirit. I respect them. I never believed the communist party’s propaganda,” he said. “Actually very few people in China nowadays still believe it. In Canada, I read more materials, and I’ve confirmed that I was right. The persecution and the state-sanctioned organ harvesting are all facts.”

Mr. Wang had come to Toronto to visit his children. He was about to bicycle around the island and watch the dragon boat games of 160 teams, which attracted more than 100 thousand people.

After his bicycle ride, Mr. Wang came back to chat with the practitioners some more.

“Do you know that the head of the communist party is about to fall soon? No dictator has a good end,” he said to practitioners. “Many Chinese should wake up now. Some people thought that the persecution of Falun Gong has nothing to do with them, and they don’t have to pay any attention to it. But I believe that everybody has a conscience and a responsibility. Only if everybody stands up against the evil, will we see justice.”

“I am rooted in China, and I believe China has hope. I also believe that Falun Gong practitioners will be able to go back to China soon,” he said before saying good-bye to the practitioners.

During the festival, practitioners demonstrated the exercises, set up a photo exhibition, offered free exercise teaching, passed out materials, helped Chinese people to quit the communist party, and collected signatures on petition.

Young Falun Gong practitioners are demonstrating the exercises.

Many Chinese tourists quit the party with practitioners’ help. Mr. Huang, a CEO of an enterprise in Guangzhou, China, said to practitioners, “It is great that you can freely practice and distribute information so that more people will know what Falun Gong really is.”

“Many party members don’t have belief in the party, and we all know the brutality of the persecution,” Mr. Huang said, and gave his card to practitioners to stay in touch.

A Taiwanese student did not believe what practitioner Ms. Wang told him. “I’ve been to Beijing. It looks great, and my father also said China is great,” he said. Ms. Wang said: “We are not trying to tell you that China is not great. I am just telling you about the persecution. We are just against the persecution.”

Ms. Wang gave him a flyer. The Taiwanese young man sat under a tree and carefully read the flyer. After a while, he came back to Ms. Wang and asked what Falun Gong’s teaching is. Ms. Wang told him that the core principles are Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance,” and then gave him a copy of Zhuan Falun (the main book of Falun Gong), saying, “You will know what Falun Gong really is after you read this.”

The student then went back to the tree and began reading the book. A few hours later, he came back and asked to learn the five sets of exercises.

Many Western tourists also learned the exercises at the festival.

Ashras from Iran (right) learns the exercises. She had come to Toronto to visit her son. She told her son that she really liked the exercises and wanted to join the local exercise site.

Maryam and her mother Bhnaz learned the exercises. Maryam had signed a Falun Gong petition in London, and written to her parliament member asking for help to stop the persecution. “I love the exercises. I can feel the energy,” she said. Her mother also said she planned to keep practicing.

Hanniel, a Toronto resident, could not believe that the persecution is still going on. “We must let more people know about it and help to stop the persecution,” he said.

A festival organizer came to practitioners’ booth and said: “Falun Dafa is good.” She asked for Falun Gong materials in English and Chinese for her friends.

Hearing on Organ Harvesting Held by U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs

June 26, 2016 | By Minghui correspondent Wang Ying

( A joint subcommittee hearing titled “Organ harvesting: An examination of a brutal practice” was held by the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs on June 23, 2016. Several witnesses gave testimony that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) conducts live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners at the scale of genocide, and that the heinous crime is exceedingly cruel.

Hearing venue

Mr. David Matas: Large Number of Falun Gong Practitioners Are Killed for Organs

Canadian human rights attorney David Matas (left)

David Matas, one of three co-authors of a recent report on organ harvesting, said in his testimony, “David Kilgour and I have been researching, writing, and speaking on the killing of Falun Gong for their organs now for ten years. Ethan Gutmann is a journalist who interviewed us on our work, and then did his own.”

“Since David Kilgour and I published Bloody Harvest, the third version of our report in book form, and Ethan Gutmann published his book The Slaughter, we three have remained active in writing, researching, investigating, and speaking on organ transplant abuse in China. Yesterday, at the National Press Club, we released an 817 page update to our work. It is now available online.”

He stated, “The ultimate conclusion of the update is that the Chinese Communist Party has engaged the State in the mass killings of innocents, primarily practitioners of the spiritually-based set of exercises Falun Gong, but also Uyghurs, Tibetans, and select House Christians, in order to obtain organs for transplants.”

“The fact that the evidence we have now examined shows much larger volumes of transplants than the Government of China has asserted, points to a larger discrepancy between transplant volumes and Government of China-identified sources than we had previously thought existed. That increased discrepancy leads us to conclude that there has been a far larger slaughter of practitioners of Falun Gong for their organs than we had originally estimated.”

Ethan Gutmann: “This Is the Familiar Specter of Human Genocide—Cloaked in Modern Scrubs.”

Journalist Ethan Gutmann

Investigative journalist Ethan Gutmann testified at the hearing, “…in 1999, State Security launched the campaign to eliminate Falun Gong. By 2001, over one million Falun Gong incarcerated within the Laogai System were subject to retail-organ testing, and Chinese military and civilian hospitals were ramping up their transplant facilities.”

“In early 2006, the Kilgour-Matas report was published. Beijing conceded that they used prisoner organs, ostensibly banned foreign organ tourism to China, and provided prisoners with permission-to-donate forms. In 2012, this thin tissue was shredded by the revelation that Bo Xilai’s protege, Wang Lijun, ran a live organ harvesting center which had performed thousands of transplants.”

He stated, “…this is the familiar specter of human genocide—cloaked in modern scrubs.”

He indicated that their newest investigation report shows that the Chinese regime’s forced live organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience is continuing at an alarming scale.

Charles Lee: China Has A Large Organ “Donor” Bank of Living Persons

Charles Lee, M.D., director of Public Awareness, World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG)

Charles Lee, M.D., director of Public Awareness, World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong (WOIPFG), testified at the hearing, “So far, WOIPFG has collected more than 3,000 academic papers on organ transplants in China, and has analyzed over 300 of them, with descriptions of donors from over 200 hospitals in 31 provinces and municipalities in China. Nearly all of them were written after 1999, especially between the years of 2000 and 2008.”

“By analyzing the descriptions of the gender, age, health condition, and cause of death of the ‘donors’, the procedure of organ removal, the data on the warm and cold ischemia time (that is, respectively, the time from the cessation of circulation until the perfusion of the organ with cold preservative chemicals; and the time from when the organ is perfused until it is transplanted into the recipient) and the rapidity of organ matching, we are able to point to the clear existence of a large organ ‘donor’ bank consisting of living persons.”

“This new set of evidence also strengthens the previous conclusion that the Chinese regime is harvesting organs from living people, and that very large numbers of captive and healthy Falun Gong practitioners have been kept as living ‘donors’.”

To show the abundance of organs available in China, he gave an example in which multiple organs were sourced for a single transplant surgery: “One typical case was Huang Jiefu’s liver transplant operation in Xinjiang in September, 2005. Huang was then the vice minister of the Ministry of Health. The first donor’s liver was discarded due to the discovery that the patient was suitable for autologous liver transplant. Then he called for another three ‘standby livers’ from three different places: Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Xinjiang (in case the autologous liver transplant failed).”

“Matching livers were quickly found in both cities, and the matching livers arrived in Xinjiang almost at the same time, at 6:30 p.m. on September 29. Huang’s operation lasted from 7 p.m. on September 29 to 10 a.m. on September 30. After 24 hours of observation, Huang announced that the operation was successful; therefore, the sparelivers were no longer needed.”

Charles pointed out, “The acceptable cold ischemic time (that is, the time from when an organ is cooled and perfused with chemicals as it is removed from the donor, until it is transplanted) for a liver is 6-10 hours. In China it is sometimes longer, but should still be within 15 hours. Therefore, one can safely say that the ‘two spare livers’ brought from Chongqing and Guangzhou could only be two intact living persons, otherwise, the extraction time, flight time, Huang’s operation time, and observation time would be at least 50 hours, the livers would have no value. Yet they were called spare livers.”

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher: The Chinese Communist Party is One of the Largest Forces for Evil in the World Today

U.S. House Representative Dana Rohrabacher

U.S. House Representative Dana Rohrabacher said during the hearing, “The Chinese Communist Party is one of the largest forces for evil in the world today. The systemic government-sponsored harvesting of organs is a monstrous crime. The Chinese regime not only deprives its people of their basic rights on a daily basis, but literally steal their body parts for profit.”

“Falun Gong practitioners, a peaceful and respected Chinese movement, continues to suffer greatly at the hands of the CCP,” said Rep. Rohrabacher. “They are victims of forced organ harvesting.” Under the efforts of human rights advocates, journalists, and investigators, the CCP’s atrocities are becoming known to the world.

Representative Smith: The CCP’s Atrocity is Barbaric

U.S. House Representative Chris Smith

U. S. House Representative Chris Smith said, “The Falun Gong repression is especially brutal, ugly, and vicious. I strongly believe that the 17-year-long campaign to eradicate Falun Gong will be seen as the biggest shame in recent Chinese history.” He commented that the organ harvesting by the Chinese regime and doctors is reminiscent of what happened in Nazi concentration camps during World War II.

He indicated that it was a little discouraging that more people aren’t coming forward to investigate the perpetrators in the persecution of Falun Gong and organ harvesting, but that this will change.

A Formidable Organ Supply Chain in China Based on Killing – New Report Released at National Press Club

June 24, 2016 | By Minghui correspondents He Yu and Mu Wenqing

( Three international investigators released an in-depth update on the killing of prisoners of conscience for their organs in China at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on June 22, 2016.

Their extensive research, based on media reports, medical journals, hospital websites, and web archives, concludes that the number of transplants performed in China–and the number of victims–are much higher than previously estimated.

David Kilgour, former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific, and human rights lawyer David Matas, published Bloody Harvest: Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Practitioners in China in 2009 to shine a light on the harvesting of organs from living Falun Gong practitioners in China, millions of whom have been detained or imprisoned for their belief.

Ethan Gutmann, an award-winning China analyst and investigative journalist, published The Slaughter: Mass Killings, Organ Harvesting, and China’s Secret Solution to Its Dissident Problem in 2014, after conducting an independent investigation.

David Kilgour, former Canadian Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific, led a press conference on the release of their new report at the National Press Club on June 22.

Human Rights Lawyer David Matas, published Bloody Harvest: Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Practitioners in China in 2009, together with Kilgour.

This report’s release and press conference came several days after the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed H.Res. 343 on June 13, condemning the systematic, state-sanctioned organ harvesting from non-consenting prisoners of conscience in China, including from large numbers of Falun Gong practitioners and members of other religious and ethnic minority groups.

“China has been perpetuating perhaps some of the most gruesome and egregious human rights violations against Falun Gong and other prisoners of conscience, yet has hardly faced any criticism, let alone sanctions, for these abuses,” explained Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), who initiated this resolution last year. She stated that the persecution and organ harvesting “must be opposed universally and ended unconditionally.”

In-Depth Investigation

This new 680-page report (available for download at provides a comprehensive update to the investigation work by the three authors over the past decade. With more than 2,300 references, it includes a large volume of information collected from media reports, promotional materials in China, medical journals, and hospital websites.

Because many Chinese transplant-related websites were deleted or modified after forced organ harvesting came to light in 2006, the report also delved into information found in website archives. In addition, the investigators examined the number of transplants, hospital bed capacity, medical staff training, and government policies and funding.

Organ Transplants On Demand

In most countries, patients have to wait years for a kidney or liver transplant. In China, however, many matching organs were located within weeks–or even days, including thousands of emergency liver transplants for patients requiring a new organ within 72 hours. Some hospitals even offered guarantees of finding a living or kidney donor within two weeks.

From promotional materials or websites of Chinese hospitals, it was claimed that donors are readily available for patients who need organs. In case of rejection, some hospitals were able to source multiple organs for one patient.

Moreover, hospitals listed their fees for organ transplants online. Some have built amenities to attract attract foreign patients (transplant tourists), a number of whom were charged hundreds of thousands or even millions of USD for an organ transplant. Waiting times were generally short, many on the order of weeks.

Ethan Gutmann, an award-winning China analyst and investigative journalist, presented updates for forced organ harvesting in China.

Large Number of Organ Transplants, Few Donations

Another phenomenon the investigators found was the huge number of organ transplants performed in China. According to hospital websites, doctors’ experiences, or media reports, some medical teams performed organ transplants one after another, with hardly any breaks. Some transplant centers’ bed utilization regularly exceeded 100%. As new buildings are constructed, facilities expanded, and beds added, organ transplant chief Huang Jiefu announced his plan in 2015 to issue transplant licenses to more hospitals, from 169 to 300.

Because of Chinese traditions requiring that bodies be preserved whole after death and the lack of an effective donation system, voluntary organ donation is very rare in China. However, the large number of organs located within such short timeframes raise questions regarding their sources. The sources claimed by Chinese officials–executed prisoners (before 2015) and voluntary donations–account for only a small fraction of the number of transplants performed.

After forced organ harvesting first attracted international attention in 2006, Chinese institutions rushed to modify or delete online data related to organ transplantation. Although China’s official number of transplants is around 10,000 a year, this number could easily be surpassed by just a few hospitals. In 2007, more than 1,000 hospitals applied for organ transplant permits from the Ministry of Health in 2007, indicating that they at least met the minimum transplant bed counts required.

Based on minimum capacity requirements stipulated by the Ministry, the 146 hospitals permitted to conduct kidney and liver transplants could have conducted at least one million transplant surgeries since 2000. In reality, all of these institutions are operating well above the minimum capacity. In addition, many institutions without permits from the Ministry are also conducting organ transplants at scale.

A State Crime

After news media exposed forced organ harvesting in China in 2006, evidence has shown that this practice has continued, although it became more secretive. Because of “problems with the organ sources,” as stated by a well-known transplant doctor, the number of transplants are often under-reported and poorly documented, making a determination of accurate numbers very difficult.

The report also covered the involvement of military, Communist Party, and government organizations in carrying out organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience, including the disappearances and forced medical tests of Falun Gong practitioners in state custody.

From sources of patients to hospitals’ credentials, capacity, personnel qualifications, and funding, the report collects detailed information in conjunction with whistleblower testimonies from witnesses to establish a network of systematic supply chains of organ harvesting, a profit-driven and state-sanctioned crime.

The tragedy does not end with organ harvesting and organ transplants. When many plastinated body exhibitions toured around the world, the sources of the bodies—most of them from China—was a mystery. Increasing evidence has linked them to detained Falun Gong practitioners, and many of them are discussed in the report.

Chinese Police Chief in Paris Grasps the Importance of Quitting the CCP

June 23, 2016

( Since the 2016 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Championship kicked off, France has seen a wave of Chinese soccer fans hit Paris. This presents a wonderful opportunity for local Falun Gong practitioners to reach out to Chinese visitors, providing them with information about Falun Gong that it very difficult to find in China because of the regime’s internet blockade.

At popular tourist destinations like the iconic Galeries Lafayette, practitioners hand out materials that tell of the goodness of Falun Gong, expose the crimes of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) – especially the brutal persecution of Falun Gong – and help people quit the Party and its affiliated youth organizations.

Chinese tourists read Falun Gong informational materials in front of Galeries Lafayette.

I Really Want to Know What You Are Trying to Tell Us

Among a group of Chinese tourists was a man who identified himself as a police chief. The man said to a practitioner, “Our tour guide doesn’t want us to accept your materials. But I really want to know what you are trying tell us. You don’t know who I am, but I am a police chief, and I am in charge of Falun Gong affairs back home.”

The practitioner responded, “It really doesn’t matter what your job is, but you are one of those who clearly knows how brutal the persecution of Falun Gong is. The communist party has brought deep disasters to China and caused 80 million untimely deaths. The persecution of Falun Gong is one of its worst crimes. Did you know that the government forcibly harvests organs from Falun Gong practitioners? Isn’t this against Heaven’s law?”

The practitioner also told the police chief that over the past year, more than 200,000 Falun Gong practitioners in China and overseas have filed lawsuits against former communist leader Jiang Zemin for launching and orchestrating the persecution.

“Hasn’t everybody seen the wave of high-ranking officials falling from power in China in the last few years?” the practitioner asked the police chief. “Every one of them was involved in the persecution of Falun Gong to a greater or lesser degree. Some of them are even directly responsible for the persecution.”

“Good meets with good returns, and evil meets with karmic retribution; this is the heavenly law. The communist party has conducted so much evil that its demise is fast approaching,” the practitioner continued. “All we have been trying to do is to tell our fellow Chinese not to go down with the wicked Party: abandon the Party for your own bright future, before it crashes. You will also be joining the millions of people who have withdrawn from the Party, leading to its eventual disintegration.”

The police chief was moved and finally understood. He quit the party and published his announcement online with a practitioner’s help. Upon leaving, he shook hands with the practitioner. “Thank you very much,” he said. “I really appreciate your words. I hope one day we will meet again in China.”

No Wonder the Communist Party Is Afraid of You

Another Chinese tourist, an older gentleman, talked to a practitioner for a long time. The practitioner told him what Falun Gong really is, an ancient practice for cultivating the body, heart and mind according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The practitioner talked about how the communist party slanders Falun Gong and spoke of the brutality of the persecution. Most importantly, he shared about why Party members should quit the CCP.

The gentleman said sincerely, “I work at the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China. But you have convinced me. I am quitting the Party. You Falun Gong practitioners have really reached a very high spiritual level. No wonder the communist party is afraid of you. You have a thorough understanding about the criminal history of the Party.”

On another occasion, a Chinese tourist approached a practitioner and said, “I believe that everything Falun Gong has said is true. The communist party has ruined my life. I totally support you. Back home, I often use software to circumvent the internet blockade and read Falun Gong websites. In 2011, I read on your website that Zhou Yongkang was about to fall, and he really fell in 2013. Now, you are saying that Jiang Zemin will fall soon. I believe you too.” (Note: Zhou Yongkang is one of the major perpetrators of the persecution of Falun Gong; in 2013 he was arrested and sentenced for corruption.)

Many Chinese tourists ask for extra materials to share with their friends back in China.

One day, a young man in his twenties said to a practitioner, “I have read a lot of your materials, even before this trip. I support Falun Gong. The communist party is a bully and a rogue party. The dictatorship is evil. The worst thing is that the party has tried to brainwash the Chinese people, and has deceived so many Chinese.”

He said that many Chinese cannot see that the Party does everything for its own interests, and never considers its people. He said that the internet blockade is wrong, and was set up because the party does not want the people to know truth. “I believe that the party will crash very soon. As a young man, it’s my responsibility to push Chinese democracy movement forward,” he said. He again expressed his appreciation for Falun Gong and said that he wanted to learn more about the teachings.

Imprisoned Shanxi Doctor Suddenly Dies, Leaving Many Questions Unanswered

June 23, 2016 | By a Minghui correspondent in Shanxi Province

( Mr. Wang Jigui from Yangquan City sounded upbeat and healthy when he called his family from Jinzhong Prison on May 26 of this year. Five days later he was rushed to a hospital and died on June 2.

Mr. Wang, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, was serving three years for distributing information exposing the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline based on the principle of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

His family received a phone call on June 2 informing them of his death hours earlier. Under the tight surveillance of the prison guards, the family viewed his body the next day. They noticed bruises on his chest and the right side of his neck. A doctor replied that it was a result of chest compression during resuscitation.

The family wondered what could have happened since his last phone call home that led to his sudden death. They questioned why they were not notified of his condition earlier. The prison authorities claimed that they mailed out a notice on May 31, but to date the family hasn’t received anything.

Mr. Wang’s death certificate listed “sepsis” as the cause of death, but his family was not given any autopsy results. His body was cremated on June 8.

Mr. Wang’s son, a 31-year-old mentally disabled man, was arrested together with him on August 4, 2014. The younger Mr. Wang wasn’t allowed to attend his father’s funeral and remains detained at the time of writing.
