Falun Gong Practitioner Yue Guixia Is Facing Trial after One Year of Detention

September 27, 2016 | By a Minghui correspondent in Beijing, China

( After being detained for over a year, Falun Gong practitioner Yue Guixia now faces trial, even though her case was turned down twice due to lack of evidence.

Ms. Yue was arrested on September 18, 2015, as she distributed Falun Gong materials. She has been held in Pinggu Detention Center ever since. She was handcuffed, shackled and placed in solitary confinement.

Ms. Yue suffered a nervous breakdown and was evaluated at a mental hospital. She was denied medical parole to seek treatment.

Her husband, who suffers from severe diabetes, relied on his wife for his care.

Their son had to quit his job to care for his father for a time until his health stabilized. Even though he managed to find another job, he is overwhelmed by the responsibility.

Their relatives are very concerned and helped to hire an attorney for Ms. Yue. They are all looking forward to seeing her safe return.

Ms. Yue, 50, was a housewife and lived in Beijing. She began practicing Falun Gong in 2004. Her health greatly improved afterwards. Her neck pain, back pain, severe insomnia, dry eye, and memory lapses all disappeared without medication.

She abides by the principles of Falun Gong, Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, is considerate of others, and no longer fights for petty gains. She took good care of her husband while he was sick, and her family became more harmonious as well.

After 8-Year Sentence, Falun Gong Practitioner Denied Lawyer Visits

August 16, 2016 | By a Minghui correspondent in Beijing, China

( After an intermediate court upheld Ms. Wang Lei’s eight-year prison sentence for her spiritual belief in Falun Gong, the communist authorities prevented her lawyer from visiting her.

When the lawyer went to visit Ms. Wang at a detention facility in Beijing on June 30, 2016, after filing another appeal against the intermediate court for upholding the sentence, his request to see her was turned down by the guards, who claimed that the lawyer could meet with Ms. Wang only after she was taken to prison.

The guards also asked for a long list of legal documents before approving his visit, including a visitation approval letter from the Beijing Prison Management Office, a receipt of the complaint he filed through the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice, Ms. Wang’s appeal, and the lawyer’s representation documents.

According to Ms. Wang’s family, her appeal had been seized by the detention facility long before. When the lawyer went to the Beijing Prison Management office to request a visitation letter, he was given the runaround.

“It’s very obvious that they are trying to cover up what amounts to a trumped-up case,” said Ms. Wang’s lawyer.

“My client was sentenced on the charge of ‘undermining law enforcement.’ But there has never been any law that says practicing Falun Gong is illegal. She was exercising her constitutional rights to freedom of belief and speech. There is no evidence that she caused any damage to the society or law enforcement just by practicing Falun Gong. And, yet, she was given such a heavy sentence of 8 years.”

He criticized the judges for rubber-stamping Mr. Wang’s sentence and assisting in the persecution of Falun Gong.

Ms. Wang Lei was arrested with a dozen other practitioners on February 26, 2014. The police did not inform her family of her arrest, nor did they allow them to visit after they learned she had been arrested.

After she was detained for over a year, Beijing Fangshan District Court sentenced her to eight years on November 24, 2015. Her family was not informed.

After her appeal, the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate Court upheld her sentence on February 24, 2016.

Ms. Wang was transferred to the detention center in Daxing District in March 2016 and subjected to intensive brainwashing. The guards beat her to try to force her to renounce Falun Gong.

After the persecution began in 1999, Ms. Wang was repeatedly arrested and sent to forced labor camps four times, where she was shocked with electric batons, beaten, force-fed, and deprived of sleep. She suffered several episodes of psychosis as a result of the torture.

Three Chinese Court Cases Highlight the Unlawful Nature of the Persecution of Falun Gong

July 25, 2016 | By You Ran

( During the 17-year-long persecution of Falun Gong in China, many practitioners in Tianjin, Beijing’s largest nearby neighbor, have been arrested for their belief. Below are three cases from earlier this year illustrating how innocent practitioners are arrested, detained, and tried for no reason.

Technical Expert Imprisoned for Belief

Li Wen had the highest GPA in his class when he graduated from the renowned Tsinghua University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1991. He was employed as a lead engineer at a factory that manufacturers glass products and television parts. He holds a number of patents and has garnered many awards from his company.

Mr. Li and his wife were arrested in July 2001 for practicing Falun Gong. He was sentenced to seven years imprisonment and held in Tianjin Prison. The management at his company sought his release, but officials rejected their requests. Company representatives were forced to visit Mr. Li in prison to get technical assistance.

In July 2015, Mr. Li was again arrested, this time while at home. He was put on trial in Hexi District Court on March 28, and his attorney Yu Wensheng pleaded not guilty, “At least 100 lawyers, in more than 1000 court trials, have pointed out the suppression of Falun Gong had no legal basis. Article 300 of Chinese Criminal Law has been abused to frame Falun Gong practitioners,” the lawyer said during the trial. The lawyer said he was attempting to not only to safeguard Falun Gong practitioners’ basic rights, but to also to stop law enforcement officials’ unlawful actions.

Defense Attorney Detained

Ninghe County Court held a trial against Mo Weiqiu in December 2015, and her husband Li Guangyuan chose to defend her. But the judge did not allow Mr. Li speak, other than answering yes or no when the judge asked questions. The trial lasted half an hour. Mr. Li asked the judge it would be impossible for the five computers found in Ms. Mo’s home to be presented as material evidence, but the court dismissed his request and said Ms. Mo would be sentenced to three to six years.

The judge asked Ms. Mo’s daughter and other relatives to leave the courtroom, and then had Mr. Li arrested. Police confiscated 7,000 yuan that he was carrying on him, and after being detained for 29 days he was forced to pay a fine.

False Testimony from Anonymous Witnesses

Two other practitioners, Chen Yuanhua and Yang Fujing, were on trial on January 26, 2016, when the chief judge asked them if they had distributed Falun Gong materials and if they were guilty. Both women said they were not distributing Falun Gong materials when they were arrested, and that they did not commit any crime. The women told the judges that freedom of belief is protected by the Chinese Constitution.

The prosecutor said three village residents were walking on the street after 1am on August 27 last year when they saw Ms. Chen and Ms. Yang distributing Falun Gong materials. The defense attorney refuted this claim, because his clients were arrested the evening of August 26 and already in custody at the time. He requested the three witnesses present their testimony in the court room and that the prosecutor present some material evidence. But both requests were rejected by the judge.

Ms. Chen and Ms. Yang were sentenced to 4 and 3 ½ years imprisonment, respectively.

Ninghe Court sentenced Ms. Mo to 4 ½ years imprisonment on April 27.

Neighbors Demand Falun Gong Practitioner’s Release from Illegal Detention

July 03, 2016 | By a Minghui correspondent in Beijing

( An older man from the Beijing area was arrested earlier this year for talking to people about the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual practice currently persecuted in China.

At the time of this report, 278 people in his town had signed a petition demanding his immediate release, claiming that he’d done nothing wrong. Many also wrote to the authorities explaining what a good person he was, and why he should be released.

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Sun Fuyi

Petition signed and fingerprinted by Mr. Sun’s fellow townsmen demanding his release from illegal detention

Mr. Sun and his wife were talking to people about the persecution of Falun Gong in a market on January 11, 2016. Someone who was deceived by the Chinese regime’s propaganda against the practice called the police, who arrived and arrested Mr. Sun. His wife narrowly escaped.

Wishes of Fellow Townsmen: Release This Good Man

After Mr. Sun was arrested, his family and friends started a petition campaign calling for his release. In less than two hours they collected over 100 signatures.

Mr. Sun was widely known as a good man who never argued or fought with anyone. One of his neighbors said that there was a muddy road in the neighborhood which no one ever bothered to fix – except Sun.

Some said that the police arrested the wrong person, and that there was nothing wrong in practicing Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, Falun Gong’s core principles.

Those who signed the petition weren’t afraid of repercussions from the authorities. One said, “I wished they’d come look for me. I have something to say to them. If they had talked to us (neighbors), they would have known that Sun is a great person.”

Many people wrote letters to the authorities, stating that they were willing to vouch for Mr. Sun. One person wrote, “I feel terrible that a good person like Sun is mistreated. I want him to be released soon.”

tatements vouching for Mr. Sun.

A neighbor named Wang Kaiyang wrote, “Sun would share everything he has. The government should stop persecuting him and let him go home.”

Known as a Helpful and Selfless Man

Mr. Sun, 68, is retired from the Huairou County Telecommunications Bureau. Since he started practicing Falun Gong in 1997, he’s conducted himself based on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. He’s always there to help.

He took care of his parents on his own and never pushed the responsibility onto his siblings. He also takes care of other elderly residents in the village whenever he can. When others need help with chores, he volunteers.

When Mr. Sun worked in the telecommunications bureau, he was a hard worker and was elected model employee every year, even after the persecution started.

Because he refused to give up his belief, since December 2004 Mr. Sun has been detained, incarcerated in a brainwashing center, and tortured in a forced labor camp, where he was held for 18 months.

His employer valued him so much that he hired him back after his release, with full salary and benefits. When the authorities ordered his employer to monitor him at work, his employer refused to comply.

The authorities would not leave Mr. Sun alone, however. In 2011, when the police constantly harassed him at his own house, he and his wife were forced to stay away from home for almost a year to avoid further persecution.

The number of arrests increased significantly in the second half of the year, which accounted for 417 cases, compared to 192 in the first half.

This increase in arrests coincided with practitioners’ filing of criminal complaints against Jiang Zemin beginning in May, calling for China’s highest court to prosecute the former Chinese Communist Party leader, who initiated the persecution of Falun Gong.

Between June and December, there were 256 arrests attributed to local officials’ retaliation for practitioners’ complaints against Jiang. These accounted for 56% of all practitioner arrests in that period.

Previous Torture Victim Sentenced to 8 Years

Ms. Wang Lei, 50, was sentenced to eight years in prison on November 24, despite having been diagnosed with a mental disorder after being shocked with electric batons by labor camp guards in 2001. She later recovered after doing the Falun Gong exercises and studying its books.

In 2010, her mental state deteriorated after police arrested her and injected her with a large quantity of unknown substances. She managed to return to normal some time after her release, only to relapse following her arrest in 2015 and subsequent beatings by guards.

Arrested for Giving Out Calendars

Mr. Wang Jianfu was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison on November 21. Including the eight years he had served from 2002 to 2009, he would spend a total of 15.5 years in prison. His latest arrest came after he distributed calendars containing information about the persecution of Falun Gong by the communist regime.

Perpetrators Turning Around

As practitioners continue to explain the persecution, more agents who had been compelled by the state to arrest and abuse practitioners have chosen to stop participating. Many police officers, when going to “talk” to practitioners, said that they had been ordered to do so and no longer bothered practitioners.

For example, three officers went to a practitioner’s home in October to verify that he had submitted a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin. The practitioner told them that it was within his rights as a citizen to file the complaint. One officer said, “We’re just following orders. Practice [Falun Gong] at home if it’s good for you.”

Two practitioners were arrested in August for putting up posters calling to prosecute Jiang Zemin. One practitioner told a policeman, “I have to practice Falun Gong. I would have died already if I hadn’t practiced it.” The officer simply said, “Go home, then.”

In 1999, Jiang Zemin, as head of the Chinese Communist Party, overrode other Politburo standing committee members and launched the violent suppression of Falun Gong.

The persecution has led to the deaths of many Falun Gong practitioners in the past 16 years. More have been tortured for their belief and even killed for their organs. Jiang Zemin is directly responsible for the inception and continuation of the brutal persecution.

Under his personal direction, the Chinese Communist Party established an extralegal security organ, the “610 Office,” on June 10, 1999. The organization overrides police forces and the judicial system in carrying out Jiang’s directive regarding Falun Gong: to ruin their reputations, cut off their financial resources, and destroy them physically.

Chinese law allows for citizens to be plaintiffs in criminal cases, and many practitioners are now exercising that right to file criminal complaints against the former dictator.
