Hubei Man Tortured During Eight Years of Imprisonment

October 03, 2016 | By a Minghui correspondent from Hubei Province, China

(Minghui.org) Having endured eight years of imprisonment and brutal torture for his belief in Falun Gong, Hubei practitioner Mr. Feng Feng was released from the Fanjiatai Prison on July 5.

“I was routinely beaten and verbally abused, regularly deprived of sleep, and forced to stand or sit on a small stool for long periods of time for days on end. At Fanjiatai, solitary confinement and intense brainwashing are used as means to force Falun Gong practitioners to renounce their belief.” The newly released Jingzhou City native recounts his experience.

For not wearing the prison uniform, he was placed in solitary confinement for 76 days just prior to his release. He was not allowed to brush his teeth or take a shower, and was denied visitation rights.

Physical violence against prisoners of conscience is commonplace in China’s correctional facilities. Mr. Feng has been subjected to various torture methods, including shocking with electric batons, beatings, solitary confinement, and being cuffed and shackled in a fixed position for days.

The following is Mr. Feng’s account of his experience.

Arrested for My Belief

I started practicing Falun Gong in 2004 after I witnessed how my parents had benefited from it. I quickly regained my health and got rid of many bad habits. I became honest and considerate, and took on a whole new outlook on life.

However, my newfound spirituality attracted attention from the local authorities. I was taken from my home in July 2008 and sentenced to eight years in prison despite my lawyer’s efforts. The decision was upheld later by a higher court.

The only way to describe my days at Fanjiatai Prison is hell on earth. The torture and mistreatment that I have endured are unimaginable to others, but is truly what’s going on against the detained practitioners on a daily basis.

Beatings and Sitting for Long Periods of Time

I was taken to the notorious Fanjiatai Prison in May 2009 and placed in Division No. 4, where all Falun Gong practitioners were detained. I was monitored by two other inmates, who routinely beat me.

Because I refused to wear a name pin, I was forced to sit on a small stool for long periods of time every day for the entire winter in 2010. The cement floor made the cold winter even more bitter. I didn’t even get any warm water at the end of the day to wash with.

Torture reenactment: Sitting for long period of time

I was subjected to another round of sitting from June 2011 to February 2012 for more than 14 hours each day, all because I didn’t respond to roll call.

Shocked in the Mouth with Electric Baton

Torture reenactment: Shocked with electric baton

A few weeks after transferring to Division No. 8 in February 2012, division head He Kai, under the influence of alcohol, beat and shocked me in the mouth with an electric baton when I didn’t respond to roll call. The entire division of 150 inmates witnessed the violence.

I went on a hunger strike to protest it and was taken to a hospital and given IV fluids on the third day. After I skipped 19 meals, political instructor Fan Junru promised me that it was not going to happen again.

However, Fan’s promise was broken a few months later. In an attempt to get me renounce my belief in April, He Kai cuffed me and took me to a small office, where he pushed me to the ground and shocked me with an electric baton for almost half an hour. The pain was excruciating.

Solitary Confinement

When He Kai finally stopped, I asked to use the bathroom and tried to get away. He followed me and with the help of another guard, captured and locked me into a small cell of only about 5 square meters. There was a cement block against one wall with a wooden board on top as a bed, and a bed pan in a corner where I relieved myself.

My feet were shackled and my hands were cuffed separately to the sides of the bed, leaving me sitting on the wooden board without being able to move much. The shackles on my feet were fixed to the bed with a lock. Whenever I moved my hands, the cuffs cut into my wrists and caused severe pain. I was kept in that position for the first three days and a total of 15 days in solitary confinement.

Blood in My Urine

I was called to the Division office in the middle of the night one night in May. He Kai hit my back with two batons simultaneously and left me covered with wounds. I shouted for help and woke the inmates in that building. I managed to take the batons from He at one point but didn’t hit him back. Instead I handed them to guard Yu Hongwei, who had just woken up.

Another round of beatings happened just a few days later at the division workshop. He Kai beat and continued to kick me in the back when I fell to the ground. I later found blood in my urine.

Cuffed and Shackled for Seven Days

I was again taken back to a small cell by the end of May. I was cuffed and shackled, and locked down for seven days straight. I had not been allowed to sleep for two days prior to that.

My wrists had deep cuts by day six, but the guards didn’t care. The cuffs irritated the already infected wounds, with pus oozing out. I feel numbness in my fingers to this day, after more than four years. The scar on my right wrist is still visible.

It was already hot in late May and the air circulation in that small space was terrible. The mosquitoes almost ate me alive.

You Can Be Jesus.”

He Kai took me out of the small cell at the end of June. He beat me as soon as we got back to our division. He cuffed my hands separately to the upper corners of the door, leaving my body hanging, and taunted me, “You can be Jesus.”

Torture reenactment: “The big hang-up”

I was cuffed to two windows in the hallway one time, with my arms spread out and two heavy wooden signs around my neck. Two inmates monitored me and made me stand the entire night. The heavy signs put so much pressure on my shoulders and neck and left me with permanent injuries. I still experience pain in my shoulders and cannot lift anything heavy.

Unknown Substance

He Kai came to me one afternoon in July and said, “I have tried everything on you but nothing has worked. I’m going to have to turn you into a psychopath.” With the help of the prison medic and five inmates, he shoveled a handful of white pills down my throat.

Repeatedly Beaten

He Kai once told me that he was the most vicious of all of the more than 500 guards at the Fanjiatai Prison. However, his every attempt to make me renounce my belief failed. I was getting transferred out of his division. Every time he saw me before the transfer, He beat me. Right before the transfer, He beat me until I was covered in wounds and taken to the prison hospital.

Sleep Deprivation

The ill treatment didn’t stop just because I was hospitalized. The medical staff and the guards decided to only let me sleep from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., and I was to stand for the rest of the 20 hours of the day. Four inmates took turns monitoring me. I was at the hospital for 10 months, from August 2012 to May 2013.

Torture reenactment: Hitting with a paper roll

I was taken to political instructor Chen Zhenming’s office after he returned from vacation. While an inmate held one of my hands, Chen slapped me until his hand started to hurt. He rolled up a magazine and hit my face with it, and caused a nose bleed.

Chen changed my schedule so that I could only sleep from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. Later it was changed to just an hour, from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. I grew so weak that I couldn’t stand anymore, but I was not allowed to sit and could only lie on the ground. The sleep deprivation and standing for more than 20 hours a day lasted for a whole month, until I finally gave in.

I found out later that warden Zhou had given instructions to the division heads, guards, and inmates monitoring Falun Gong practitioners to do whatever they could to get the practitioners to renounce their belief. Zhou wanted a 100% transformation rate.

Denied Bathroom Use

When I was discharged from the hospital and transferred to Division No. 1 at the end of May 2013, I refused to perform hard labor and didn’t report my every move to the inmates monitoring me like I was told. I was not allowed to use the bathroom in the mornings until lunch break, and in the afternoons until dinner. I was made to stand for long periods of time and developed many bumps on my legs.

I didn’t participate in roll call and didn’t squat as ordered in November 2014, and was pushed to the ground and beaten.

Warden Huang Hai and inmate Liu Jun beat me in the summer 2015 because I refused to perform hard labor. Huang apologized later on.

For not wearing a prison uniform in April 2016, I was put into solitary confinement for 76 days. I was not allowed to brush my teeth or take a shower for 55 days.

Xiantao Woman Missing After Recent Arrest

August 14, 2016 | By a Minghui correspondent in Hubei Province, China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Tong Dongxiang from Xiantao, Hubei Province was arrested on May 26, 2016. Her attorney was unable to locate her after much effort, and her whereabouts remain unknown.

Ms. Tong practices Falun Gong, a self-cultivation practice that has been brutally persecuted by the Chinese Communist regime since 1999.

In 2015, Ms. Tong was tortured in a brainwashing center for refusing to renounce her faith–the latest ordeal in a long string of arrests and abuse in a forced labor camp.

Her attorney said, “The law enforcement officers should know the law. How can they be so arrogant and unruly? How can a person go missing like this?”

Extensive Search

Ms. Tong was working at her family-owned neighborhood convenience store on May 26 when she was arrested by several officers from the Xiantao City Domestic Security Division.

While officers told Ms. Tong’s family that she would be released in a few days, she was still detained after two weeks and transferred to Xiantao Detention Center.

When her attorney tried to visit her at the detention center, he was told that Ms. Tong had been taken away on July 8. However, officers refused to disclose her whereabouts.

The attorney went to Ganheshuilu Police Station near her residence but learned nothing even after visiting every office. He was about to report her as missing when he was told to inquire at the police headquarters.

The officer in charge of Ms. Tong’s case said they needed permission from higher authorities to disclose her whereabouts.

Ms. Tong’s attorney submitted the required documentation and was told that Ms. Tong was held at Banqiao Brainwashing Center.

He then accompanied Ms. Tong’s family there on July 19. But when they arrived, no one was there. It was unclear whether the detainees had been transferred to another location due to a storm a couple of days earlier.

Tortured, Sexually Abused in Custody

Ms. Tong was detained at Banqiao Brainwashing Center from September 7 to November 27, 2015 for helping other practitioners mail criminal complaints against Jiang Zemin, the former head of Chinese Communist Party who launched the persecution of Falun Gong.

While incarcerated, she was not only forced to attend brainwashing sessions but was also shocked with electric batons and sexually abused.

Ms. Tong filed her own complaint on April 11, 2016 with the Hubei Province Justice Bureau for the abuse and torture she endured at Banqiao Brainwashing Center. She also documented articles of clothing that were burned and torn from being shocked with electric batons.

Ms. Tong’s husband, Mr. Liu Xiong, was also arrested at the family store on the morning of April 12, one day after Ms Tong’s arrest. The police initially refused to disclose his whereabouts. Weeks later, his family was told that his arrest had been approved and that he was held in Qianjiang Detention Center.

Prior to her latest arrest, Ms. Tong had been arrested eight times between 1999 and 2009 for practicing Falun Gong. She was twice sent to a forced labor camp, where she suffered brutal torture and abuse.

October 28, 2015 | By Minghui Correspondent in Hubei Province, China

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Feng Xiaoyuan was arrested fordistributing Shen Yun Performing Arts DVDs. She was held for over 15 days at the Wuhan No.1 Detention Center before she was transferred to a brainwashing center . Her family members have been trying to get her released.

Ms. Feng was arrested by officers from the Ximalu Street Police Station in Jiangan District, Wuhan City on September 11, 2015.

Family Given the Runaround

Ms. Feng’s family members were given a detention order document at the Ximalu Street Police Station. It stated: “Based on No. 27, Item 2 of China’s Public Security Administration Punishment Law, Feng Xiaoyuan is detained for 15 days fordisturbing the public order and hurting others health using fake religion and qigong.”

The family went back to the police station on September 26, 2015, to appeal for Ms. Feng’s release, but officer Hu said, “Our job is to arrest people, not release them.”

Then, Ms. Feng’s family called Director Peng, who was in charge of her case. They wanted to meet with him, but he refused. He said, “We have no authority to release anyone. You can sue the detention center if she is not released in 15 days.”

The family went to the Wuhan No. 1 Detention Center the following morning and was told that Ms. Feng had been transferred. The guard on duty refused to provide further information when asked, so Ms. Feng’s family said they would considertaking legal action against the detention center for violating the detention document.

The guard then called his supervisor and said that Ms. Feng was taken back to the Ximalu Police Station.

When the family called Director Peng to inquire about Ms. Feng, he denied that the police station had taken her back and suggested to the family that they sue the detention center for detaining Ms. Feng for more than 15 days.

After further inquiry, officials at the detention center finally admitted that Officer Xu Junping from the Qiaokou District Police Station had taken Ms. Feng.

On their way to the Qiaokou District Police Station, the family members received a phone call informing them that Ms. Feng was transferred to the Legal Education Center, a brainwashing center in Qiaokou District.

261 Falun Gong Practitioners from Huangshi City, Hubei Province Sue Jiang Zemin

October 11, 2015 | By a Minghui correspondent from Hubei Province

(Minghui.org) In Huangshi City, Hubei Providence, 261 Falun Gong practitioners have filed criminal complaints against Jiang Zemin since the end of May, according to reports compiled by the Minghui website.

The practitioners charge the former Chinese dictator with initiating the brutal suppression of Falun Gong and hold him responsible for the tremendous suffering inflicted upon them by his campaign. The criminal complaints were mailed to the Supreme People’s Court and Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

Many of these practitioners recounted how Falun Gong returned them to health and gave them a new outlook on life. Their dream to live a healthier and happier life, however, was shattered when Jiang launched a nationwide campaign to eradicate the practice in 1999.

Simply for refusing to give up their belief, they were arrested, detained, tortured, and had their homes ransacked and personal belongings seized by the communist authorities. Many also saw their families implicated for their belief, while some were also forced to pay huge fines.

Some of the lawsuits against Jiang from Huangshi City were filed by their family because the practitioners either were tortured to death or are still in prison.

Below, we profile the cases of several practitioners.

Tortured to Death, Organs Taken Without Consent

Mr. Song Wanxue worked at Fengjiashan’s Copper Mine Factory. He went to Beijing twice to petition the central government to stop the persecution of Falun Gong. When he returned from Beijing the second time, police and guards from the security section of his workplace arrested him on January 20, 2001. Authorities told his family that they would receive an urn of his ashes.

Three days after his arrest, Mr. Song died from torture at the age of 45. His heart, liver, and kidneys were removed. The authorities claimed that they had sent the organs to Wuhan, the capital of Hebei Province, for inspection. His family asked for the return of Mr. Song’s body parts, but never received a response.

Police would not allow his wife a last viewing before the cremation. In August 2015, Mr. Song’s wife filed a criminal complaint against Jiang on behalf of her husband.

Severe Injuries Inflicted in Detention

Mr. Luo Wen, 47, worked at the Huangshi Railroad Bureau. He was arrested, detained, and sentenced multiple times for practicing Falun Gong. Police broke into his home and seized his personal property when no one was at home.

During one detention, Mr. Luo was tortured so badly that he lost his hearing and could not straighten his back. Eight of his teeth were broken.

For a period of time, he was forced to move to another city to avoid the persecution. Police tracked him down, arrested him again, and took him back to Huangshi City in July 2001. A court secretly sentenced Mr. Luo to seven years in prison and did not inform his family of the decision.

When Mr. Luo’s family learned of the sentence, they asked an attorney to appeal the case to the intermediate court, which refused to accept the appeal. Mr. Luo is still detained in Shayang Prison. His wife filed a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin on her husband’s behalf.

Other Cases of Abuse

Ms. Cai Guixiang, 53, was held in a forced labor camp for two years. She was deprived of sleep, closely monitored 24 hours a day by drug abusers, not allowed to speak with others, forced to do hard labor, subjected to physical punishment, and made to pay frequent fines. She lost more than 40 pounds during two years of detention. Her hair almost completely turned white.

Mr. Du Daxing, 80, a retired engineer from Huangshi City, was arrested three times. After his first arrest, more than 20 officers took turns interrogating him. After his second arrest, he was detained for one month and forced to pay a detention fee. On his third arrest, he was taken to a brainwashing center.

Ms. Liu Xiaolian, 69, a retired worker, was handcuffed behind her back and shackled for 45 days in the summer during 45C (113F) temperatures. Her flesh burned under the metal cuffs. After she was released from the cuffs and shackles, she lost all feeling in her hands and feet for several days. “My hands were swollen like steamed buns, and my arms were as thick as my calves.” The scars on her wrists are still visible.

In addition to above practitioners, the following have also filed their criminal complaints:

Mr. Dong Xiangping (董相平), 72, farmerMs. Feng Yuangui (冯元桂), 51Mr. Gui Lixin (桂立新), massage doctorMs. Yu Juying (喻菊英), 74

Background

In 1999, Jiang Zemin, as head of the Chinese Communist Party, overrode other Politburo standing committee members and launched the violent suppression of Falun Gong.

The persecution has led to the deaths of many Falun Gong practitioners in the past 16 years. More have been tortured for their belief and even killed for their organs. Jiang Zemin is directly responsible for the inception and continuation of the brutal persecution.

Under his personal direction, the Chinese Communist Party established an extralegal security organ, the “610 Office,” on June 10, 1999. The organization overrides police forces and the judicial system in carrying out Jiang’s directive regarding Falun Gong: to ruin their reputations, cut off their financial resources, and destroy them physically.

Chinese law allows for citizens to be plaintiffs in criminal cases, and many practitioners are now exercising that right to file criminal complaints against the former dictator.
